Embedded systems: Rust's memory safety and low-level control make it a good fit for building applications that run on resource-constrained devices, such as microcontrollers. The data science community has developed a number of libraries for working with data in Rust, including Rust-Bio, a library for bioinformatics, and Rust-Ndarray, a library for numerical computing. Data analysis: Rust's strong typing and efficient performance make it well-suited for data-intensive tasks. For example, the Cloudflare network infrastructure team uses Rust to build parts of their edge network. Networking: Rust's low-level control and concurrency support make it well-suited for building networked applications. These tools make it possible to build high-performance web servers and applications in Rust. Web development: Rust has a number of libraries and frameworks for web development, including Rocket, Actix, and Nickel.Operating systems: Rust is being used to build the next generation of operating systems, such as Redox, which aims to be a secure, practical, and modern replacement for Unix-like operating systems. Some examples of where Rust is used include: Rust is used in a wide variety of contexts, including systems programming, web development, and data analysis. This makes it possible to write code that is both concise and expressive, and to create custom language extensions. ![]() Rust also has a powerful macro system, which allows code to be generated at compile time and to interface with the compiler itself. This helps prevent the kinds of bugs that can occur in languages with more permissive memory models, such as null or dangling pointer references. Rust uses a borrowing and ownership system to ensure that references to data are always valid and that data is always owned by exactly one piece of code. One of the key features of Rust is its strong emphasis on memory safety. ![]() Rust is a statically typed, compiled language that is designed to be efficient, safe, and concurrent. ![]() Rust is a programming language that runs blazingly fast, prevents segfaults, and guarantees thread safety. ![]() This portion of the “Letter” begins roughly halfway through the text, and opens what professor Jonathan Rieder refers to as the “Prophet” section. By calling this expression “extremist,” moderates are showing a lack of distinction between violence and non-violence (179). If these repressed urges are not allowed expression, they will certainly turn to violence. The “Negro community” also feels this “vital urge” and is attempting to fulfill it through marches, pilgrimages, and prayers. King insists that “oppressed people” will eventually pursue their freedom, as is happening throughout the world. King and the SCLC were to step down as the clergymen wish them to (178). Further, he not-so-implicitly warns that more blacks would be attracted to violent movements if Dr. King insists that he tries to “stand between” these two sides, to encourage “the more excellent way of love and nonviolent protest.” He proudly believes he has been successful in this aim, and that the South has experienced less bloodshed because of it. These people have “lost faith in America” and consider the white man to be a “devil” (178).ĭr. On the other side are black people full of “bitterness and hatred,” people like Elijah Muhammad and his Muslim movement, which more or less supports violence. On one side is “complacency” - the black people who have been demeaned for so long that they no longer hope for anything better, or those “few middle-class Negroes” who profit superficially and hence fear change that could threaten their comfort. He again cites the clergymen's statement, which calls the SCLC action “extreme.” He considers how he stands in the middle of “two opposing forces” in the movement for black equality, and defines both sides. King argues that good men must take action in the current day, and no longer wait (178). King warns that moderates will one day repent having settled with “silence” instead of taking action against injustice. ![]() Conversely, “people of ill will” have used time to their advantage, convincing moderates that patience is the right course in the case of segregation. King calls this a “tragic misconception of time,” arguing that “time itself is neutral” and needs men of action in order to force change. Moderates, he claims, believe that, as it took Christianity 2,000 years to flourish, so will black equality be realized with time. He also attacks moderates, more directly than he had before, for their cries of patience. In other words, the robber or villain should always be punished, not the victim for having given the villain something to attack (177). He cites the clergymen's statement, which argues that the actions of the SCLC “precipitate violence.” However, he likens this attack to blaming “a robbed man” because he had money to steal, or “condemning Jesus” because his faith angered others. The protestors only bring this tension and injustice to the surface. He is disappointed that moderates do not realize that the black man does not cause tension, but rather reveals society’s underlying tension by taking direct action against injustice. He believes this moderation is worse that outright “ill will” (176-177). By preaching patience and valuing “order” over “justice,” moderates have ensured the continuation of segregation. King makes “two honest confessions.” He first confesses that he has been “disappointed with the white moderate,” who he believes has been the largest obstacle to integration and black freedom. Based on this case, we argue that rigid distinctions between instrumental and constitutive functions of rhetoric are misleading and that rhetorical critics should regard the constitution of self and the instrumental uses of character as a fluid relationship.Dr. This constitutive dimension of character occurs simultaneously and in intimate connection with its use as an instrument of persuasion concerning specific issues. This construct allows King to criticize his target audience without alienating himself from it and also allows the “eavesdropping” black audience to discover a model for reconstructing their own sense of agency. Using Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” as a case study, we argue that the text develops a complex and nuanced construction of King’s character. This generative function of character becomes especially important in cases where suppressed groups attempt to find rhetorical means to alter their cir- cumstances. ![]() Traditional conceptions of rhetorical ethos treat character exclusively as an instru- ment of persuasion, but the persona of the rhetor often functions as a means of con- stituting the self in relation to a complex network of social and cultural relationships.
