In the end, it’s up to you whether or not the subscription is worth the app and the particular benefits you get. Rough math says the cost per data fetch comes out to about 3 or 4 hundreths of a penny. So you’re left with the choice of charging an overly high initial fee to cover costs down the road, or have a small subscription to cover those ongoing costs. As the dev says, paying that regular fee won’t be covered by the initial cost of the app and he’d end up losing money. Carrot has to pay that money to Dark Sky. It’s a tiny charge, much less than a penny per request, but it makes them money in the long run. So they attach a very small charge per data fetch for anyone using an app that wasn’t bought from them. Otherwise they’re literally working for nothing. of course Dark Sky will monetize their data in this case. Multiply that by all the users who didn’t buy an app from Dark Sky. And they’re requesting data 48 times per day, something like 1440 times per month, give or take. But it’s not like it’s one guy, it’s every user of the app. Now Carrot comes along and is using Dark Sky data. I think the WU app is free but last time I tried to use it (which was awhile ago), it was unresponsive and not terribly useful. For Dark Sky, you buy their app and they provide data. Individual users requesting data from Dark Sky or WU don’t cost that much for either provider. I don’t know the precise details, I’m sure /u/makerofcarrot could explain better.
